With European market data on heavy trucks and busses, Dataforce is completing its portfolio of commercial vehicles data. The Heavy Commercial Vehicles Market comprises of around 300,000 registration every year, making it a total of 20% of the commercial vehicle market, but a much higher part in market revenue, due to higher price / unit.

Key facts of the Heavy Commercial Vehicle market

After difficult years in 2020 and 2021, the market has rebounded in 2022. With ongoing supply issue across the globe, there is a dire need for heavy vehicles for transportation and support with construction and agriculture. In the first half of 2023, we see a further improvement of the market with 17% growth. Leading brands are Mercedes Benz Trucks with just under 33,000 vehicles, followed by MAN with 25,000 and Volvo Trucks with 22,900 vehicles. The dominant vehicle sold is the Semi-Trailer truck with 50%, followed by a big margin by the bus with 7%.

Overview of available information

Next to our new registrations information on Passenger Cars and Light Commercial Vehicles, Dataforce now has European coverage of the Heavy Commercial Vehicles in Europe.

Most important information that we have available are the different tonnage (weight) classes and the different body styles (semi-trailer, flatbed, bus, tipper, etc.). For most countries the data goes back until 2015, which will allow for a historical trend analysis.

Dataforce defines the HCV market as the vehicles with gross vehicle weight of over 7 tons, and which includes M3, N2 and N3 vehicles.

East Europe important factor

As with passenger cars, Germany is the largest European market for heavy commercial vehicles. In the first half of the year, almost 50,000 units were registered, representing 28.6% of the market. Interesting is the role of Eastern Europe. Having a large footprint in the transportation sector, a lot of trucks are registered there. Poland’s registrations for HCV represent 19,8% of the market, while for the passenger car market this is only 3.6%. For Romania this relation is 2.5% vs 1.1%. It shows that for manufactures and service providers Eastern Europe has a much more prominent position than for passenger cars.
