Sometimes a treasure of old gold coins is found, as recently in Kentucky, sometimes it is gold nuggets.

Gold discoveries are always a fascinating affair. More than 700 rare gold dollars were recently found by a Kentucky man, buried on his farm in a cornfield. They date from the Civil War era, and among them are eighteen $20 gold Liberty coins, for example, with one alone worth six figures. The coins, probably hidden during the American Civil War, are also in very good to mint condition. But it is not only old gold coins that are fascinating, but also large gold nuggets that have been found. Nuggets have very high purity grades. Especially nuggets found in Australia score with a purity grade of 95 percent or more.

The largest nugget ever found (in 1869) weighed 72 kilograms, came from Australia and was given the name Welcome Stranger. It was cut into three pieces and melted down. A German miner found the Holtermann nugget, weighing 290 kilograms, three years later in New South Wales, Australia. The fine gold content was about 57 kilograms. Basically, it was not a nugget, but a gold quartz lump with a very high gold content.

A nugget found in Germany, the heaviest, weighed 10.2 kilograms. Several sensational nuggets were discovered at the time of the Brazilian gold rush in the 1980s. This was, for example, the Canaã 5 nugget weighing 18.3 kilograms. This nugget was not melted down and is still on display at the Brazilian Central Bank. Gold prospecting companies include Skeena Resources and Sierra Madre Gold and Silver.
