The turnkey waste-to-energy (WtE) plant in Olsztyn, Poland, which was supplied by Doosan Lentjes together with Doosan Enerbility as a consortium partner, has successfully completed trial operation. This milestone shows that the plant fulfils all contractually agreed performance and availability criteria and is operating reliably.

From 12 October to 11 November 2024, the WtE plant was operated for 720 hours without interruption. During this time, the plant demonstrated its reliable and stable operational capability with a continuous boiler load of over 90 %. The trial operation included proof of operability at maximum capacity (MCR), a safe cold start and emission-compliant operation at the lowest boiler utilisation. The test was carried out under the supervision of the EPC consortium and was performed by the future operation and maintenance teams (URBASER).

Milestone for waste management and energy supply in Poland

With a capacity of 120,800 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) per year, the new waste-to-energy plant makes an important contribution to strengthening the local waste management infrastructure in Poland. The WtE boiler generates up to 48 MWth of live steam for a steam turbine of approx. 11 MWe. The steam from the turbine is used to heat the Olsztyn district heating network, covering around 30% of the local district heating demand.

In addition, the waste-to-energy plant fulfils all current European BAT (Best Available Techniques) emission standards and supports a sustainable circular economy through the thermal teatment of waste.

"The successful trial operation underlines the reliability of our technologies and the technical expertise of the team," says Mustafa Kaymakci, Project Manager at Doosan Lentjes. "Operation under real conditions has shown that the system works reliably even at maximum capacity and complies with all emission limits. The combination of our tried-and-tested water-cooled reciprocating grate and the innovative Circoclean® flue gas cleaning system ensures that we combine maximum efficiency with the sustainable use of resources."

First joint project between Doosan Lentjes and Doosan Enerbility

The Olsztyn waste-to-energy plant is the first project of its kind to be realised jointly by Doosan Lentjes and Doosan Enerbility. As part of the turnkey contract, Doosan Lentjes was responsible for the planning, delivery, installation and commissioning of the entire mechanical and electrical part. The new plant is operated by URBASER and owned by Dobra Energia dla Olsztyna.
