CERATIZIT has made significant progress in implementing its ambitious sustainability strategy. The company presented its key performance indicators at AMB, the international exhibition for metalworking.

The recently published sustainability report of the Plansee Group, of which CERATIZIT is a part of, shows that some of the defined targets have been exceeded. CERATIZIT’s sustainability strategy focuses on four key areas: sustainable product and technology innovation, material and resource efficiency in production, attractive working conditions, and the combination of ecological and social aspects in the supply chain.

CO2 footprint reduced by 22 percent

An important key performance indicator in the first phase is the corporate carbon footprint (CCF). In the 2023 financial year, CERATIZIT was able to reduce the CCF by 22 percent compared to the base year 2020, from 201,449 tonnes of CO2e to 156,988 tonnes of CO2e (Scope 1, 2 and 3). The company is therefore well on track to achieve its target of a 35 per cent reduction by the 2025 financial year.

Recycling rate exceeds targets

Another key performance indicator is the recycling rate for the primary raw material tungsten. The company was able to exceed the target of 90 per cent in 2023, with a recycling rate of 95 per cent. Andreas Lackner, Spokesman of the CERATIZIT Executive Board, emphasises: “In our sustainability strategy, we are focusing on those areas in which we can achieve the greatest impact. We not only want to become more sustainable, we also want to be a pioneer and role model in our industries.”

Melissa Albeck, Member of the CERATIZIT Executive Board, adds: “After initially focussing on reducing our carbon footprint and increasing the recycling rate for tungsten, we are now also increasingly focusing on the topics of attractive working conditions and ecological and social aspects in the supply chain.” Based on extensive surveys of employees and suppliers, CERATIZIT will be taking more measures in the coming months to guarantee attractive working conditions and ensure ecological and social aspects along the supply chain.

Closing the loop

At the AMB, CERATIZIT also presents the ProACT-Mill milling cutters, which not only offer up to 30 percent longer tool life, but were also developed on the basis of the more sustainable upGRADE carbide CT-GS20Y. This carbide grade is characterised by a proportion of over 99 percent reclaimed carbide powder and therefore conserves valuable raw material resources. With the ProACT-Mill products, CERATIZIT closes the loop that begins with the supply of raw materials by buying back and reprocessing worn carbide tools and continues right through to the finished tools. The company is thus setting an example for sustainable and resource-conserving production.
