Tin is produced with the raw material tinstone. It has a silvery-white color, which turns grayer due to oxidation by rain and cold. Tin can be confused with zinc or lead. In this case, zinc tends to appear dull and becomes blotchy. Lead takes on a dark gray color over time and it is heavier than tin or zinc. Tin can therefore be recognized by its silvery-white or grayish-gloss color. It is easy to bend, does not break the way lead does, for example. Zinc cannot be bent, and it does not break.

Tin is not only used for soldering, it is used for the production of sheet metal or alloys with tin are produced, for example bronze or gunmetal (copper, tin and zinc). Incidentally, the gold-colored euro coins contain, among other things, one percent tin, the so-called Nordic gold. It consists of 89 percent copper, five percent aluminum, five percent zinc and one percent tin, so it is not gold. Tin is a component of metal alloys with a low melting point that cannot be replaced by other substances.

The largest tin reserves exist in China, followed by Indonesia and Myanmar. China also has the largest refined tin production on earth (201,000 tons in 2021). The main application is solder. Further important is its use in semiconductors and in the production of tinplate. Consumption is lower for household items such as cutlery, packaging materials and tin cans.
