Since 2018, Kicking Horse Golden, BC has been Freeride World Tour’s home in North America. With the fourth-largest vertical drop on the continent, Kicking Horse is renowned for its steep, challenging terrain and cold, dry powder snow. The competition venue, Ozone, was historically a permanently closed area, but thanks to cooperation between FWT and Kicking Horse it has since become an iconic competition venue (that also opens to the public when conditions allow). With 324m of vertical drop and an east-southeast exposure, Ozone features a wide variety of terrain in a compact area, giving options for both classic big mountain lines as well as progressive freestyle runs.
Though world champions will not be decided until the competition in Verbier, Switzerland, the event in Kicking Horse Golden is guaranteed to deliver an unrivaled level of competitive intensity. Once the Kicking Horse results are finalized, a ranking is created by counting each rider’s top two results. Of the approximately 46 FWT 2022 riders, only the top 25 (11 top ski men, 6 top ski women, 5 top snowboard men, 3 top snowboard women) will win a spot in the FWT Finals, in Fieberbrunn, Austria (15-20 March) and Verbier, Switzerland (26 March – 3 April). Riders falling below The Cut are relegated to the FWQ Finals where they’ll have to battle against the top-ranked Freeride World Qualifier riders for a chance to regain their spot on the World Tour.
The results to-date on FWT 2022 have provided a roller coaster of emotions for riders and fans alike. Some of the more historically successful riders have faltered at the early events, while tour rookies and Wildcards have made a massive impression. Victor De Le Rue (FRA), currently ranked 3rd overall in Snowboard Men, is the only one of the four defending world champions to be in the top three of their respective categories. In Ski Men, three of the top five-ranked riders are tour rookies or Wildcards. The current leaders of the Ski and Snowboard Women categories are somewhat less surprising, with experienced riders Hedvig Wessel (NOR), Erika Vikander (USA) and Tiphanie Perrotin (FRA) sitting atop the rankings.
This combination of factors means Kicking Horse Golden, BC is an event that fans of the FWT absolutely must not miss.
