The European Energy Exchange (EEX) will conduct the auctions of emission allowances within the European Emissions Trading System EU ETS on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany for another two years. The corresponding contract was extended by the German Environment Agency until January 2024.

Since 2010, EU emission allowances (EUA) and EU aviation allowances (EUAA) have been auctioned off for the Federal Republic of Germany via EEX. Until now, EEX successfully carried out about 700 auctions for the Federal Republic of Germany, corresponding to a volume of more than 1.4 billion tonnes of CO2.

In total, EEX conducts auctions within the EU ETS for all 27 EU member states, three EEA-EFTA states, the European Investment Bank as auctioneer of the Innovation Fund and Modernisation Fund as well as for the United Kingdom with regard to power generation in Northern Ireland. In addition to its central role as the auction platform for the EU ETS, EEX was also awarded the contract as a sales platform for the national emissions trading system ("nEHS") by the German Environment Agency in March 2021, which for the first time sets a CO2 price for the heating and transport sectors at national level.

Peter Reitz, Chief Executive Officer of EEX, comments: "We are very pleased to be able to act as the auction platform within the EU ETS on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany for another two years and are grateful for the trust placed in us. As the central platform for auctions in the EU ETS as well as sales in the nEHS, we can continue to contribute to achieve climate targets and drive climate protection forward.”

The schedules for the auctions within the EU ETS as well as the sales dates for the national emissions trading system for 2022 are published by EEX in the auction and sales calendar respectively. The clearing and settlement of emission allowances is carried out by the clearing house European Commodity Clearing (ECC).
