The new point cloud plugin from PointCab attempts to eliminate all these hurdles. Like the PointCab plugins for BricsCAD and Revit, the AutoCAD plugin is designed to make modelling point cloud data much easier. In order to do so, PointCab relies on a connection between its point cloud software Origins and AutoCAD. In Origins, more than 25 open and proprietary point cloud formats can be imported directly. This eliminates the need for data conversion. Import time is also drastically reduced thanks to the software’s innovative converter parallelisation. Instead of the 3D point cloud view, Origins automatically creates a front, top and side view of the project. These 2.5D orthophotos act like x-rays of the point cloud and provide a much clearer view of the data than the 3D view. Floor plans and sections can then be created and edited with just a few clicks. Thanks to the plug-in connection between Origins and AutoCAD, all lines, 3D points, circles and much more created in Origins are now transferred to AutoCAD in real-time and in the correct position. This eliminates the time-consuming import and the tedious navigation in the point cloud in AutoCAD. The modeller can concentrate fully on his main task – modelling.
PointCab’s AutoCAD plug-in is currently still in the beta phase. So far, similar functions as for the BricsCAD plugin are planned. However, the PointCab team is still looking for beta testers to help adapt the plugin perfectly to AutoCAD and make it as user-friendly as possible. Interested parties who have not yet dealt with Origins are explicitly invited to sign up as beta testers as well.
